To bring about a change in the assessment patterns in schools ’Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation’ (CCE) has been introduced by CBSE, the training of which is being imparted to teachers by conducting training workshops by CBSE. With the objective of equipping teachers with the necessary skills and expertise to implement CCE in their schools.

A recent training workshop has been conducted in Modern Secular Public School, Dhuri-148024, District Sangrur (Punjab) on Saturday, 3rd  August, 2013, and attended by 106 teachers from leading schools of Punjab, Haryana & other adjoining areas of Punjab. The workshop in addition to reinforcing the value of CCE, addressed classroom transactions, different types of assessment, (particularly formative assessment), designing questions, the teaching and assessment of life skills and attitudes documentation and recording, classroom management, and suggested streaming procedures for subject selection in class IX and XI etc.

This interactive and highly informative workshop is aimed at encouraging teachers to eventually own the concept of CCE. Teachers have been given hands on experience to evaluate a role play working with a given template, and also through planning designing integrated projects. The sessions on assessing Life skills, Attitudes and Values, Tools and Techniques and Documenting & Record Keeping is found to be very helpful and of value by most of the teachers. As participants from different Schools said "The sessions kept us all fully engrossed and have been very enriching ". They also stated that we gained clarity on concepts of CCE & felt confident that we can explain the same to other teachers in our school".

A brief Report on the Teachers’ Training Workshop on Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) & FA (Formative Assessment) organized by CBSE at Modern Secular Public School, Dhuri-148024, District Sangrur (Punjab) on Saturday, 3rd  August, 2013.

The programme started at 9:30 a.m. on 3rd August with 106 teachers from 77 CBSE schools of Punjab. The programme has been conducted by Ms. Amrit Aujla and Mr. Rajiv Sharma, two eminent Resource Persons from CBSE. After a formal welcome and inaugural ceremony, the Principal of Modern Secular Public School, Dhuri, Mrs. Gurvinder Kaur briefed the participants regarding the sessions and the agenda. She also highlighted certain important instructions to be followed during the workshop by the participants.

Session 1 started at 10.00 a.m and the resource persons, Ms. Amrit Aujla and Mr. Rajiv Sharma highlighted the meaning, features and concepts of CCE with the help of slides, handouts and activities followed by different stages of assessment and the features of formative and summative assessments with the help of the activities. This session ended at around 11.30 a.m with the clarification of doubts from the participants.

Then this session has been followed by a break for 15 minutes.

The next session (Session 2) started at 11.45 a.m. the resource persons, Ms. Amrit Aujla and Mr.Rajiv Sharma highlighted the nuances of Formative Assessment with its meaning, features and tools. Activities like “finding and exploring key words of Formative Assessments” helped the teachers in the clarification of their doubts in this area. In Activity – 2, various groups representing different schools have been asked to dramatize various activities which remained very interesting. As teachers collectively gave input to the betterment of the project by suggesting introductions; like slogan telling, role plays etc. During activity 4, the teachers have been asked to form groups according to their subjects and asked to go through their subject specific handouts. They have been asked to present their opinions in front of all participants. 

This session has been followed by lunch break at 1.30 p.m.

The session 3 resumed at 2.00 p.m. the resource persons detailed the features, meaning and tools of Summative Assessments. Teachers have been asked to differentiate and find ambiguous questions. It has been instructed that the questions with many possible answers or ambiguous answers shouldn’t be encouraged. Questions of different types e.g questions based on knowledge, understanding comprehension, analysis, and synthesis should be promoted. Use of probing in designing questions should be used so that the questions can be leading. Also cues can be given that should help in framing answers.

Activity 4 emphasized on typologies of question paper with the help of sample questions. Then the Resource Person, Ms. Amrit Aujla helped teachers by interacting with them. She also added ideas to her talk about how to develop value based questions. 

This session has been followed by tea break at 3.30 p.m.

Session 4 resumed at 3:45 p.m. by the resource persons and they focused upon the factors of assessing Co-Scholastic areas. They also presented various descriptors of life skills, work education etc.

At the end, the teachers have been asked to fill up the feedback form and the workshop ended with a formal valediction and vote of thanks by the Director of Modern Group of Institutions, S. Jagjit Singh at 5.00 p.m. Every participant found stating that "The description on Tools & Techniques has been wonderful. Really, it is a great workshop, systematically organized. We enjoyed attending it".

Many more training workshops on CCE & FA, in near future, are earnestly requested.
